鐔または鍔とは、剣のガードのことです。武士の手を守るために剣の刃と柄の間に取り付けます。鐔には様々な題材の装飾が施されています。動物、植物、魚介類、昆虫、架空の生物、日用品、模様、昔話に題材を取った物など、家紋と同じ様にバラエティに富んでいます。

A tsuba is a sword guard. It is mounted between the sword’s blade to protect samurai’s hands. a tsuba is decorated with a variety of subjects. Animals, plants, fish and shellfish, insects, fictional creatures, everyday items, patterns, and objects based on ancient stories are as varied as family crests.
